Healthy Old Mike here. One of the best parts of training is the people you train with. Today I had two training partners, both named Alex (one from Russia, one from Ukraine). Different backgrounds, same goal: get better, rep by rep. The energy was perfect to try a different technique: the drop set.

What We Did Today

We ran a simple, effective finisher:

Set 4 (weighted): I strapped on a dip/free-weight belt with 10 kg added and pushed through strong, clean reps.

Drop: We removed the extra weight.

Immediate finish: I continued with bodyweight reps to technical failure.

That’s it. No magic. Just effort, smart progression, and good spotting. The Alex duo kept me honest—counting reps, hyping me up, and making sure I didn’t quit early. (Yes, sometimes you need someone to tell you there’s “one more” in the tank.)

What’s a Drop Set?

A drop set is when you take a set close to failure, reduce the load, and keep going without resting. You can do one drop (like we did) or multiple drops, but the key is continuous work. The goal is to increase training stimulus—more mechanical tension and metabolic stress—without needing heavier and heavier weights.

Why It Works (Especially If You’re Not 20 Anymore)

Intensity without ego: You don’t have to chase massive weights to get a big benefit.

It’s Time-efficient: One extended set, big results.

Helps Mind–muscle focus: The drop forces you to lock in form when you’re tired—great for quality reps.

It’s Joint-friendly: Start heavier, finish lighter. Your joints will thank you.

The Best Part

The highlight was the teamwork. Two guys, from two opposing countries, cheering me through the hard reps, together! That’s the lesson: good training partners make you better, not just stronger.

If I can do it, so can you!
